We read a number of books that showcased Diversity including ‘The Colour of Home; about a refugee boy who comes to live in England. We also explored the life of the poet Benjamin Zephaniah by both reading his autobiography and looking at different biographies that have been written about him.
The children worked in small groups to devise a short role play demonstrating one of the elements of ‘Diversity’ they had learnt about over the unit. These included discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping and respecting similarities and differences between each other.
In Music we listened to songs linked to Diversity and explored lyrics in more detail. We then wrote our own lyrics to part of the song ‘This is Me!’ from The Greatest Showman. We learnt to sing the song and added percussion before performing and recording to then evaluate.
“You may think that we are all the same
let me tell you that that’s not the case.
we are brave, we are strong,
we are where we’re meant to be, proud to be me
Come on now to where we stand
we’re working together to make it shine
We’re not scared to be us
We make no apologies, proud to be me.
As all of the racism starts to kick in
Well, fire away ’cause today, we will let those words fly away
We are pushing through the crowds today
we are reaching for the end
We are all diverse
Yeah, we are all diverse.
We won’t let them take us underground
We know that there’s a place for us
For we are all diverse.”
